The Deep South End:
Our home is closest to the last two guarded beaches in Ocean City: 58th Street and 60th Street, which are just two minutes walking distance from our house to the beach entrances. Our home is second from the corner of 59th and Asbury which is one block from the beach entrance. 59th Street borders Corson’s Inlet State Park, and is the last developed block of the island. Beginning at 57th Street, there are no beach front properties. All properties that view the beach are across (on the “bayside” of) Central Ave. So, at 58/59 and Central you will see the Lifeguard Patrol Station with bathrooms and a parking lot for the park and beach. This lot is vacant at the close of the day, and the neighborhood boasts peaceful and quiet evenings.
Beach access is a short and easy walk down 59th Street where you can enter the beach 1 of 3 ways. To the right of 59th street there are two entrances that put you onto 60th Street beach (there actually is no 60th Street in OCNJ) where you can choose to sit close to the guard or continue south onto the expansive beach of the nature park that leads to the beautiful south point of the island. It is very open there, and crowds are low as you head south a bit. If you decide to use the third entrance that is actually accessed in the parking area, (just south of the Lifeguard station), you will be right by the 58th street guarded beach. The two guard stands are very close together so you can easily find a spot that suits you and the options are many.
In our opinion, a “must-do activity” at our end is to walk around the the south point during low tide, if you love nature, beach walks and beachcombing/shelling. You can wave to people at the Strathmere point as well! Swimming at the point is prohibited because of the currents from the inlet, but you may see some people fishing and some mild water sports there. Off of the beach are trails in the park that people enjoy for birding and exploring. Wildlife is best at the south end if you enjoy that!
Being at the end of the island has advantages of smaller crowds, although Summer is pretty full everywhere!
Beyond 55th street there are only developed houses on Central, Asbury and West. This contributes to the quiet of the Deep South End that the neighbors all enjoy.
For close food, (besides the ice cream trucks that come by the beaches all day), 55th street has Sacko Subs, Mike’s Seafood, A’ La Mode ice cream shop, Mallon’s sticky buns, Boyer’s Market (for take out and small grocery needs) Captain Bob’s Family restaurant, and soon to be opened, Bennie’s Bread and Italian Take Out!
The Sea Gull Shop on 55th is a wonderful place for fishing tackle, beach chairs and supplies. A bike rental is also available at 55th and West. We are a very short drive from Strathmere which boasts more wonderful restaurants for take-out or dining.
The closest supermarket is Acme at 34th. There is a Wawa, CVS, Hoy’s, farmer’s market and gas station at 34th, as well as access to the mainland and stores for shopping and spirits in Marmora. Just over the bridge at 34th street you can access the Garden State Parkway to head to other shore points.
If you love to cook and prefer eating in, our kitchen has all you need to have fun with that!
In the summer, the shopping and entertainment section of the boardwalk is about a 15-minute drive. Daytime bike rides to the boardwalk are only about a 3-4 mile ride. Another bike ride people enjoy is the causeway road (accessible from 56th/Bay) that leads to the Rush Chattin bridge at Corson’s Inlet and then on to Strathmere! Wonderful sunsets can be viewed on the point, at the inlet, or from the beach as the sun drops over Corson’s!
We hope you enjoy the Deep South End should you decide to stay!
When I sold the hosts their condo it was completely unfurnished. They upgraded with a new refrigerator, garbage disposal and outdoor security lighting and will be installing an outdoor shower before summer. Their condo is cute, cozy and clean with a cool shore vibe! Just one block to the beach too! The hosts thought of everything!
